Year of the Rabbit 4709 – Chinese New Year Parade

Your Organizer, Rick H., sent the following message to some members of The Chicagoland Digital Photography Meetup Group:

It may be snowing tomorrow. Dress accordingly. Protect your camera, too.

Parking will be tough because of all the snow. Come early to get a good spot or take public transportation.

Bring spare batteries. Batteries die in the cold (they come back when they get warm).

We’ll meet at the corner of 22nd PLACE (NOT 22nd STREET) and Wentworth, in front of the Pui Tak Center.

We will leave that corner between 11:45 AM and 12:00 noon to pick spots along Wentworth to shoot the parade. The parade traditionally starts at the south end of Chinatown and goes north to Cermak Rd. It starts around 1:00PM and runs for about an hour.

If you are late, you can try to call me on my cell phone: 773-339-2655. No guarantee I’ll hear it once the parade begins, though. I’ll have a sign or a Meetup pin on me.

We will regroup at the Pui Tak center (same spot) after the parade is over, so you can try to find us there if you come late or lose us in the crowd.

If you want to go out with the group afterward for a bite to eat, bring money. Most restaurants are not keen on writing separate checks.

It’s our 5th annual photo outing to Chinatown to watch this year’s Chinese New Year Parade. It’s the Year of the Rabbit 4709. Come join us and face the cold to watch marching bands, floats, dancing lion teams, and, of course, lots of people. We must meet early because the streets around the parade are closed off by noon. Parking is difficult, but if you get there early enough, it’s not that bad.

The parade starts at 1:00 at 24th and Wentworth and heads north, but we need to get there early to stake out viewing areas on Wentworth before the crowds block the street. Plus, there is lots to shoot even before the parade begins. That’s why we’re meeting at 11:30AM.

Last year was cold, but we survived. Bring extra batteries (kept warm in your inside pocket). Come dressed warmly. We may grab a bite to eat afterward if anyone wants to stick around.

WEATHER NOTICE: It is still winter, so weather can adversely affect this event. Please read our Weather & Meetup Cancellation policy. Keep an eye on our message boards for any weather updates or event cancellations.

[Note: You do not have to RSVP "NO", unless you want to leave a comment]
